Maarquii is the high femme hip hop experience of Marquise Dickerson, a multi-disciplinary artist who raps, sings and dances. After bouncing around in their youth to Eldorado, Arkansas and Tillamook, Oregon, they found their place in Portland’s queer scene, performing as drag alter-ego Coco Black, back up dancing for Chanti Darling, and dancing in local dance companies. In 2016 they launched their debut EP Heavy Petty, which was followed by Lullaby in Gemini, both projects created in collaboration with Portland producers Jvnitor. Over industrial beats, Dickerson alternates between soulful R&B, club-centric hip-hop and ethereal, spaced out jams.
In the wake of both releases Maarquii has headlined PDX Pop Now, and had the pleasure of sharing stages with Mykki Blanco and Cakes da Killa and local acts like The Last Artful, Dodgr and Explode Into Colors. Representing all that is high femme, black, sex positive and queer, you can always expect to be wowed by them.
